Music Notes: Madonna 'devastated' by worker's death, new Modest Mouse

- Madonna has released a statement saying how "devastated" she is about the death of a worker at the Stade Velodrome in France. The victim died after the roof collapsed while the stage was being constructed at the stadium. At least six others were rushed to the hospital. Madonna was supposed to perform at the venue on July 19, but the show has now been canceled. [NME]

- Modest Mouse will drop a new 7-inch single, "Perpetual Motion Machine," on July 21. You can hear the b-side "History Sticks to Your Feet" here. The single will be limited to 4,000 copies, and will also be on red vinyl with an embossed sleeve. [Pitchfork]

- The 2009 Emmy Awards nominations are highlighting some musical contributions to TV. Justin Timberlake is up for three awards: "Outstanding Guest Actor In A Comedy Series" for his work on Saturday Night Live, as well as two nominations in the "Outstanding Original Music And Lyrics" category for his SNL digital short “Motherlover" and "I Live Sports" song from the 2008 ESPY Awards. - We already heard Thom Yorke's contribution to the Mark Mulcahy tribute album yesterday — now you can listen to The National's contribution, which happens to be a cover of Polaris' "Ashamed of the Story I Told." SNL's "MacGruber" Skits Get Big Screen Treatment

It looks like we'll be getting a MacGruber movie in addition to the MacGyver movie that was announced in March.

A big screen version of Will Forte's Saturday Night Live character has been greenlit. SNL cast member Kristen Wiig will continue to play her Vicki character, and Val Kilmer and Ryan Phillippe are in negotiations to join the cast.

The "MacGruber" skits parody the '80s television show MacGyver. The original series starred Richard Dean Anderson as a (now infamously) mulleted secret agent who used his scientific and engineering knowledge to piece together everyday objects to escape from dangerous situations.

Music Notes: Rock the Bells, No Doubt 'deliver' Adam and the Ants cover

- The initial line-up for this year's Rock the Bells, the annual international hip hop festival, is set. Acts will include Nas & Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley, The Roots, Common, Big Boi (of Outkast fame), KRS-One, House of Pain featuring La Coka Nostra, Reflection Eternal, Tech N9ne, and more. Dates haven't been announced yet, but the festival will be held in the following cities: Chicago, Toronto, Washington DC, Boston, New York, Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, Vancouver. - No Doubt will be appearing on the Gossip Girl season finale in May, covering Adam and the Ants' "Stand and Deliver." Personally, I think they did a far better job tackling Talk Talk's "It's My Life." But you can judge for yourself by listening to the player below: [imeem via SPIN]

- The Yeah Yeah Yeahs will appear as musical guests on this week's Saturday Night Live, hosted by heartthrob Zac Efron. [NBC.com]

- Patrick Wolf is set to debut new songs during a May 6 New York show at Le Poisson Rouge. Wolf will be performing acoustic renditions of songs that will be on his upcoming album, due for release sometime in June. [NME]

- Sigur Rós frontman Jón Þór Birgisson, aka Jónsi, is releasing an album with Alex Somers this July. The album will be released under the name Riceboy Sleeps, and will feature nine songs recorded in Iceland. [NME]
