Music Notes: All Points West highlights, RHCP to end hiatus in October

I have Internet off and on right now... so even though I didn't do a new music post, here's a round-up for the day:

- The Red Hot Chili Peppers plan on ending a two-year hiatus by getting started on new material this October. Drummer Chad Smith told Billboard, "It'll be two years in September, so now we're ready. You can't force people to play when they don't want to play or aren't ready to play or whatever – not in our band, anyway." [NME]

Music Notes: Police investigate MJ's doctor, Leonard Cohen adds more US tour dates

- Police and federal agents searched the Houston clinic belonging to Michael Jackson's doctor today, looking for evidence of manslaughter. It looks like agents left with a forensic image of a hard drive along with 21 documents. [Associated Press via Yahoo! News]

- Leonard Cohen has announced more US tour dates for October and November. This year has marked the first proper Leonard Cohen US tour in 15 years. [SPIN]

- MGMT will appear on Jay-Z's The Blueprint 3. [Pitchfork]

- Modest Mouse will release an eight-song EP, No One's First, And You're Next, on Aug. 4. [NME]

- The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a two-night celebration at New York's Madison Square Garden this October. Bruce Springsteen, U2 and Metallica are on the roster of performers. [SPIN]

Music Notes: Madonna 'devastated' by worker's death, new Modest Mouse

- Madonna has released a statement saying how "devastated" she is about the death of a worker at the Stade Velodrome in France. The victim died after the roof collapsed while the stage was being constructed at the stadium. At least six others were rushed to the hospital. Madonna was supposed to perform at the venue on July 19, but the show has now been canceled. [NME]

- Modest Mouse will drop a new 7-inch single, "Perpetual Motion Machine," on July 21. You can hear the b-side "History Sticks to Your Feet" here. The single will be limited to 4,000 copies, and will also be on red vinyl with an embossed sleeve. [Pitchfork]

- The 2009 Emmy Awards nominations are highlighting some musical contributions to TV. Justin Timberlake is up for three awards: "Outstanding Guest Actor In A Comedy Series" for his work on Saturday Night Live, as well as two nominations in the "Outstanding Original Music And Lyrics" category for his SNL digital short “Motherlover" and "I Live Sports" song from the 2008 ESPY Awards. - We already heard Thom Yorke's contribution to the Mark Mulcahy tribute album yesterday — now you can listen to The National's contribution, which happens to be a cover of Polaris' "Ashamed of the Story I Told." Quality stuff. Mulcahy also led Polaris, who are perhaps best known for Nickelodeon's The Adventures of Pete & Pete theme song. [Pitchfork]

Music Notes: Muse album release date, Modest Mouse to tour

Early edition of Music Notes today — I'm still in the recovery stages of whatever I caught last week, but I plan on attending a Regina Spektor show tonight. Review to follow.

- Muse have announced the release date for their next album The Resistance, via their website. The album is set to come out on Sept. 14 (so let's assume that's Sept. 15 for those of us in the US). [Muse.mu]

- Modest Mouse will tour, starting this August in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Jim Fairchild (formerly of Grandaddy, currently of All Smiles) will fill in for Johnny Marr. [Pitchfork]

- Blink 182 will play a new track, "Up All Night," while on tour. [Billboard]

- Kings of Leon plan to launch their own record label. [NME]

- Kristen Stewart (Twilight) has been meeting with Joan Jett in preparation for portraying the rock icon in The Runaways. The NME quotes Stewart as saying, "I'm just listening to her music all the time. I'm trying to just make myself aware of the time period and what she was going through. It's one of the most immense responsibilities to play a real person. Her story's important. It's an incredibly triumphant feminist story really." [NME]

Music Notes: John Lennon - the NYC years, Modest Mouse single to drop

- A new John Lennon exhibit will be open to the general public tomorrow at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Annex in Manhattan. The exhibit, "John Lennon: The New York City Years," was curated by Yoko Ono and Jim Henke (from the Rock Hall). [Rolling Stone]

- A New Jersey-based entertainment company, with plans to have a reunited Jackson Family perform together in July 2010, is trying to block Michael Jackson's plans to perform in London this summer. [Reuters via Yahoo! News]

- A new Modest Mouse single featuring two songs, "Satellite Skin" and "Guilty Cocker Spaniels," will be released May 26. The songs will also be on sale via iTunes. [Pitchfork]

- Dead Weather, Jack White's latest band, will go on tour in North America this summer. The tour is meant to support their upcoming debut album Horehound (due July 14). The tour will begin on June 11 in Louisville, KY, and will come to an end October 4 at the Austin City Limits Festival in Texas. [SPIN]

- Fever Ray will tour North America in the fall. [NME]

- More girl power: Blondie and Pat Benatar will co-headline a tour, featuring The Donnas as special guests. [NME]
