It's time to revisit one of the many singles from one of most popular albums of the mid-nineties by a band that recently regrouped to go on tour.This Week's Pick: "Sunday Morning" by No Doubt (Year: 1995/1997)
No Doubt released their third album, Tragic Kingdom, in 1995 — nearly a whole decade after the members first got together to form a band. Though the band did release two albums before Tragic Kingdom, they weren't able to gain mainstream success during the grunge movement. But perseverance paid off. Tragic Kingdom put the band on the map. It also happened to feature seven singles including "Don't Speak," a track that was extremely difficult to avoid during the time period.
The band's sixth single, "Sunday Morning," was released in 1997 — two years after Tragic Kingdom first came out. Though it was a minor hit compared to other singles like "Don't Speak" and "Just a Girl," the song is still an extremely catchy, sunny-sounding tune even though the lyrics focus on the sourer aspects of romance (like many of frontwoman Gwen Stefani's songs did at the time).
The video is equally fun, with a sassy Gwen Stefani strutting around in a retro-inspired outfit. We get to see the band playing together in a garage, food shopping and prepping a meal before finally getting into a food fight as the song comes to an end. Angsty lyrics or not, the video provides us with a glimpse of the fun, playful side of the band during their most memorable creative period.
