Cast of Green Day's American Idiot Stage Production Announced

The names of the seven performers who will star in the world premiere of American Idiot were announced today, with Tony Award winner John Gallagher Jr. (Spring Awakening) leading the cast as Johnny.

American Idiot is based on Green Day's multi-platinum album of the same name. The production will include a live band onstage performing all of the songs from the American Idiot album and select tracks from Green Day's latest album, 21st Century Breakdown, as the characters' stories unfold.  According to the press release, the show "follows working-class characters from the suburbs to the city to the Middle East" as they "seek redemption in a world filled with frustration."

The six additional performers who are showcased in the production are Matt Caplan (Rent, South Pacific onstage, Across the Universe on film) as Tunny, Michael Esper (A Man for All Seasons) as Will, Tony Vincent (Jesus Christ Superstar, Rent) as St. Jimmy, Mary Faber (Avenue Q) as Heather, Rebecca Naomi Jones (Caroline, or ChangeLittle Shop of Horrors and Rent touring companies) as Whatsername and Christina Sajous (Rent national tour) as Extraordinary Girl.

Green Day's American Idiot will debut at the Berkeley Rep in their hometown, with previews beginning September 4. Tickets can be purchased now as part of a season subscription and regular tickets go on sale August 7.  The production will run through October 11. [Berkeley Repertory Theatre]
