SF Outside Lands Replaces Beastie Boys with . . . Tenacious D?

SF Outside Lands organizers have announced that Tenacious D will take the headlining spot for the festival's Sunday line up.  The Beastie Boys had originally been announced as Sunday's headliners, but the rappers were forced to cancel after Adam "MCA" Yauch was diagnosed with cancer last month.

Tenacious D isn't really my thing and they sure aren't the Beastie Boys, but I know they've got a lot of fans who are really into them and I'm sure they'll have a big crowd staying to see them on August 30 at Golden Gate Park. [SF Outside Lands]

Music Notes: All Points West highlights, RHCP to end hiatus in October

I have Internet off and on right now... so even though I didn't do a new music post, here's a round-up for the day:

- SPIN has this photo gallery capturing moments from this past weekend's All Points West festival, which was held for the second year in a row at New Jersey's Liberty State Park. [SPIN]

- Pitchfork also has a report here. [Pitchfork]

- The festival featured Coldplay covering the Beastie Boys' "Fight For Your Right." Check it out here.

- The Red Hot Chili Peppers plan on ending a two-year hiatus by getting started on new material this October. Drummer Chad Smith told Billboard, "It'll be two years in September, so now we're ready. You can't force people to play when they don't want to play or aren't ready to play or whatever – not in our band, anyway." [NME]

- Check out the cover of Jay-Z's Blueprint 3 here. [Pitchfork]

- Michael Jackson's mother Katherine Jackson received permanent custody of his children. [CNN]

- Modest Mouse will release their Heath Ledger-directed video for "King Rat" tomorrow. [SPIN]

Music Notes: Jay-Z replaces Beastie Boys at APW, Monsters of Folk announce tour dates

Slightly early music notes today, though there's a good amount of interesting news out there. Pop Wenches will be going Comic-Con crazy over the next few days while Callie reports from the trenches, but I'll still be blogging more music news and a Retrovideo Friday post tomorrow.

- Jay-Z will replace the Beastie Boys at New Jersey's All Points West festival on July 31. Believe it or not, it's the first time he'll be playing a festival stateside. [NME]

- Monsters of Folk, the indie supergroup reported on here, have announced plans for a fall tour which will start off in Vancouver, BC before hitting 16 US cities. Tour dates are listed here. They've also announced some European tour dates, which can be seen here. [SPIN, NME]

- Madonna's definitive greatest hits collection, Celebration, will come out Sept. 29 as both a single and double album. It will also feature a couple of new tracks including "Celebration," which will be released as a single on Aug. 3. [Rolling Stone]

- Flight of the Conchords sophomore album, I Told You I Was Freaky, will come out Oct. 20. [Pitchfork]

- Eddie Van Halen recently underwent surgery to treat pain in his left hand. The cause of this pain? A twisted tendon and cyst in his left thumb's joint. Van Halen seems to be recovering well, saying, "Surgery was a success, now I just have to let it heal. I am totally jazzed that they found the problem, fixed it and in about four months my hand will feel like I am 18 again. Thank God.” [Rolling Stone]

- Two albums by New Jersey postpunk group The Feelies — Crazy Rhythms and The Good Earth — will be reissued after years of being out of print. Both albums will be out on CD and vinyl on Sept. 8. Bonus tracks will be available via digital download. [Pitchfork]

Music Notes: Yeah Yeah Yeahs replace Beastie Boys at Lolla, Jackson documentary details

- The Yeah Yeah Yeahs will replace the Beastie Boys at Lollapalooza following Adam Yauch's cancer announcement. [Rolling Stone]

- Sony Pictures is in final negotiations to make a film out of rehearsal footage from Michael Jackson's "This Is It" tour. The price is $60 million, the planned release date is Oct. 30. It looks like 90 percent of the money will go to the Jackson estate, while the remaining 10 percent will go to AEG Live — the group behind Jackson's London tour dates. [Hollywood Reporter - Showbiz411]

- VH1 is reviving Divas. This September, we can expect to see Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis, and Miley Cyrus take the stage that once featured Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Patti LaBelle, and Celine Dion. Really, VH1? [Entertainment Weekly]

- Fifteen more tracks for The Beatles: Rock Band were revealed today. The tracks include "Can't Buy Me Love," "I've Got a Feeling," and "Paperback Writer." [Rolling Stone]

- Gossip have announced US tour dates for the month of October. A full listing can be found here. [SPIN]

Music Notes: Beastie Boy reveals cancer diagnosis, Thom Yorke debuts new song

- Beastie Boy Adam Yauch (aka Adam "MCA" Yauch) revealed that he's being treated for cancer in his parotid (salivary) gland. Yauch revealed this information via a video posted on the band's site. As a result, the band have canceled upcoming tour dates and will push back the release of their next album. In better news, Yauch did say, "The good news is that they did scans of my whole body, and it's only localized in this one area, and it's not in an area that affects my voice, so that's nice." We sincerely wish him the best and hope he gets well soon. [SPIN]

- Thom Yorke debuted a new song ("The Present Tense") while playing the Latitude Festival in the UK this past weekend. Watch video of it here. Yorke treated the crowd to a mix of solo material and Radiohead songs, including fan favorite "True Love Waits" (which was released on the I Might Be Wrong live EP) and the rarity "Follow Me Around," which has never been released on a live or studio album. [Greenplastic]

- Chris Brown has issued a public apology, via his Youtube channel, for beating Rihanna in February. Brown said he did not speak up sooner due to his attorney's advice. He added, "I cannot go into what happened, and most importantly, I'm not going to sit here and make any excuses. I take great pride in me being able to exercise self-control and what I did was inexcusable. I am very sad and very ashamed of what I've done." [Access Hollywood via Yahoo!]

- Weezer are almost done with their next new album, and there are plans to release a Pinkerton reissue. Actual release dates for both have yet to be determined. [Pitchfork]

Retrovideo Friday: "I like my sugar with coffee and cream..."

Killer robots and Japanese construction workers — what do we have?

This Week's Pick: "Intergalactic" by Beastie Boys (Year: 1998)

The Beastie Boys have been kicking it for three decades now, and as a result, they have an extensive catalog of well-loved albums, singles and... music videos. "Intergalactic" is among one of those iconic songs/videos that many remember to this day. The song, which was released as a single in 1998, can be found on the group's fifth studio album Hello Nasty. The song made it to the Billboard charts in both the US and UK, and ultimately received a Grammy for Best Rap Performance By a Duo or Group.

The video itself reflects the fun and offbeat aspects of the song, which begins with a portion of Rachaminoff's "Prelude in C-sharp Minor." (Some versions of the video begin with a sample from Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring.") Viewers are then treated to the sight of a giant, boxy robot popping in the streets of Japan, while the Beastie Boys themselves rap dressed up as Japanese construction workers. The video is campy, reflecting elements of Kaiju films like Godzilla and TV shows like Power Rangers. The video ends with a showdown between a giant octopus-headed creature and the robot before the latter flies off into space.

Intergalactic indeed.

Watch the video for "Intergalactic" below and see why it won "Best Hip Hop Video" at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards.

You can listen to/download the first single, "Blanchard," here. It's a pretty lovely, haunting tune. So if you're a fan in any capacity, check it out. [SPIN]

- Pandora lives on! Internet radio companies and major record labels have reached a royalty agreement that will allow web radio sites like Pandora to survive from a financial standpoint. [Rolling Stone]

Music Notes: Glastonbury lineup, plus some sad news

- The full Glastonbury lineup has been announced, and it is massive. The big headliners are Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, and Blur. Other acts performing during the June festival include Franz Ferdinand, Metric, Jason Mraz, Ray Davies, Art Brut, Black Eyed Peas, Regina Spektor, Fleet Foxes, Lily Allen... and more. Seriously. For more, visit the festival's homepage. [GlastonburyFestivals.co.uk]

- Former Wilco member Jay Bennett, 45, died in his sleep early on Sunday. Bennett left Wilco in 2001, and recently sued the band, claiming that he was owed royalties. Bennett contributed quite a bit to Wilco's catalog — one of these contributions included the song writing credits he shared on nearly every song on their 1999 release Summerteeth. Bennett's cause of death is unknown at this time. [Rolling Stone]

- The Beastie Boys have named their new album — Hot Sauce Committee. It's supposed to come out in September. [Pitchfork]

- Eleven music fans died at a festival held over the weekend in Rabat, Morocco, after a rush to exits caused a fence to collapse. Forty others were injured. The event featured performers like Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder and Kylie Minogue. [SPIN]

- Hundreds gathered to mourn slain rapper Dolla at a service held in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday. [NME]

Music Notes: Preview six Green Day tracks, shaking up The Shins, tours tours tours

- Green Day are streaming six songs from the upcoming 21st Century Breakdown here. The songs were originally previewed during a segment from L.A. radio station KROQ's Kevin and Bean Show. [GreenDay.com]

- Whoa! Some major changes for The Shins: keyboardist Marty Crandall and drummer Jesse Sandoval are no longer in the band and there's a new Shins album in the works. (For those who are curious, no it does not seem like Crandall's exit has anything to do with the domestic abuse issues that popped up around the time he was dating former America's Next Top Model contestant Elyse Sewell). [Pitchfork]

- A jazz-influenced track by Iggy Pop, "King of the Dogs," was released digitally yesterday, and can also be heard here. The track will appear on June 2's Préliminaires. [Stereogum]

- Listen to a new Beastie Boys track, "Lee Majors Come Again," here. [SPIN]

- Asobi Seksu have extended their US tour by adding dates in Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois, Ohio and New York. [NME]

- And Peaches has extended her North American tour. [NME]

- Kylie Minogue is also apparently going to embark on her first (mini) North American tour. [Prefix Mag]
